Bloodless Caesarean Section

Gia Foundation

The GIA Project - Dr. Volker and his team have implemented a "bloodless" Caesarean section procedure that greatly reduces chances of transmission of infection from HIV-positive mothers to their babies during childbirth. By making the initial incision without breaking the ovular membranes, infant exposure to maternal blood is greatly reduced. With no drug or surgical intervention, HIV transmission from mother to baby during childbirth is around forty percent. The use of prenatal drugs reduces the transmission rate to eight percent. By limiting fluid transmission between the mother and baby through innovative surgical procedures, Dr., Volker and his team have reduced the HIV transmission rate in their patients to two percent. Some training but little additional obstetric equipment is required to carry out the technique - allowing the technique to take hold quickly in developing nations where HIV care is critical. Since Dr. Volker implemented the procedure at the Nevada School of medicine, twenty babies have been delivered by HIV-positive mothers with no transmission of the HIV infection.

Dr. Volker's vision for improving women's healthcare is the impetus for the Women's Health Institute (WHI). The institute will be a world-class facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, filling the need for a West Coast-based institution that is dedicated to providing comprehensive, premier women's health services. WHI will capitalize on Las Vegas's reputation as an international destination and the most rapidly-growing city in the United States. The facility will be a leader in the field of medicine - improving care practices through leading-edge research, technologically-advanced physician training, and public education. The WHI will provide a family-friendly, stress-free environment for women's medical procedures, therapy, and recovery. In addition, the WHI will be focused on outreach, serving as an educational resource for research and development of new medical techniques for the medical community at-large. The WHI's Las Vegas location will be the ideal destination for nationally-recognized physicians to collaborate in conjunction with major medical device manufacturers on development of better clinical and surgical treatment options for women. WHI will be part of a six-acre medical campus, synergizing medical, health, and educational services for the holistic treatment of women's physical, emotional, and social concerns.
